Overview

Our team was tasked with producing a 60-second video ad for Minus Par Golf, a start-up brand in sports and lifestyle apparel. The challenge was to create a narrative-driven ad that showcased their golf clothing line as not only high-performing on the course but also effortlessly stylish in everyday life. The video, titled "From Tee to Tea", follows a seasoned golfer, Filippo, and his young student, Freddie, as they transition seamlessly through a day of golfing, casual outings, and relaxation—all while staying comfortable and stylish.

Creative Concept

The core concept of "From Tee to Tea" was to demonstrate the versatility of the brand's apparel, emphasizing that it can take wearers from the intensity of the golf course to casual social settings without compromising on style or comfort. We incorporated a mentor-student relationship between Filippo and Freddie to evoke a sense of respect, admiration, and professionalism while subtly communicating the idea of growth, both in sport and personal style.

Video Narrative and Structure

The video was broken down into five key scenes, each designed to emphasize different features of the clothing line, while building a natural story arc from early morning practice to an evening of relaxation:

  1. Sunrise on the Golf Course
    We began with a breathtaking sunrise shot over a pristine golf course, immediately capturing the audience’s attention with visual appeal. Filippo, a golfer in his 30s, is seen taking a perfect swing, with his young student Freddie watching in admiration. This opening scene conveys the precision and elegance of the brand’s apparel.

  2. Mid-Morning Game
    Through a series of close-ups and slow-motion shots, we highlighted the clothing’s breathable fabric, flexible fit, and stylish design as Filippo and Freddie walk, swing, and practice putting. Freddie’s movements mimicking Filippo’s subtly emphasize the coach-student relationship while showing that the apparel performs under pressure.

  3. Lunchtime Transition
    The third scene featured Filippo and Freddie transitioning from the golf course to a stylish clubhouse restaurant. Without changing outfits, they are able to join friends for lunch, looking fresh and stylish—a nod to the versatility of the clothing.

  4. Afternoon Activities
    To reinforce the apparel's adaptability, we depicted Filippo and Freddie in various casual settings, including shopping for golf gear, practicing at the driving range, and reviewing swing techniques. These moments were captured in dynamic wide and medium shots to emphasize the flexibility and comfort of the apparel, while maintaining its modern, stylish appeal.

  5. Evening Relaxation
    The final scene showed Filippo and Freddie enjoying tea at a cozy outdoor café, with an evening sky transitioning from dusk to night, surrounded by twinkling fairy lights. The relaxed atmosphere and clear bond between coach and student underscored the versatility of the apparel, which remained comfortable and stylish throughout the day.

For this video, we focused on high-end, cinematic production quality to reflect the brand’s premium image. Key production elements included:

The client operates within the digital marketing sector, utilizing various online platforms to promote products and engage with customers.

  • Goals and Objectives: The primary objective of the project was to create a series of short, engaging video advertisements to showcase Pepperbox Wines' new Malbec and Rose wines, ultimately driving brand awareness and product sales on social media platforms.

Camilla secured a picturesque holiday home for filming and arranged for a talented chef to craft the tasty dishes featured in the videos.

  • Vision: As the Director of Photography, I collaborated closely with the client to conceptualize and execute a creative vision that would effectively showcase Pepperbox Wines' products in an aesthetically pleasing manner. This involved careful consideration of factors such as location, lighting, props, and styling to ensure that each shot conveyed the desired message and atmosphere.

  • Collaboration: Throughout the three-day shoot, our team worked hand-in-hand with the client, exchanging ideas and refining the visual presentation of the wines and dishes. This collaborative approach fostered a sense of partnership and allowed us to fine-tune each aspect of the production to meet the client's expectations.

  • Innovative Techniques: We opted to film the videos using a 6K Cinema Camera, enabling us to capture stunningly detailed footage with exceptional clarity. Additionally, shooting in raw video format provided greater flexibility during the post-production process, allowing us to enhance and refine the final product.

  • Specific Steps: Our production process involved meticulous planning and coordination at every stage, from scouting locations and arranging logistics to directing the shoot and managing post-production tasks. By adhering to a detailed production schedule and closely monitoring our progress, we ensured that the project remained on track and within budget.

Goals and Objectives: The primary goal was to create a promotional video series that depicted the joyous experience of a young couple, Hattie and Rickesh, moving into their new home. The objective was to present this narrative in a fun and trendy manner, thereby appealing to a younger demographic and boosting engagement on social media platforms.

Project Overview

Scope: The project required us to produce a series of promotional videos. These videos were to showcase the excitement and beauty of moving into a new home. Specifically, we needed to film at three different locations—Forest Walk in Curbridge, Harbour Place in Havant, and Niveus Walk in Shaftesbury—and create seamless transitions between these diverse settings to give the illusion of a single, cohesive moving-in journey.

Brief:

  • Dates: Filming took place over two half days, on the 28th and 31st of July.

  • Models: The couple, Hattie and Rickesh, were dressed casually in jeans and tops to maintain continuity across different filming days.

  • Locations:

    • Forest Walk: 1 Arle Road, Curbridge, Southampton, SO30 2JG

    • Harbour Place: Havant Road, Havant, Hampshire, PO9 3LW

    • Niveus Walk: Wincombe Lane, Shaftesbury, Dorset, SP7 8QF

The brief included detailed instructions on specific actions and transitions that needed to be filmed in the lounge, kitchen, and bedroom 2 of each house. For example, actions like hanging a photo, placing a rug, carrying a box, and making a bed were meticulously planned to create dynamic transitions.

Challenges

  • The primary challenge was to execute clever and creative transitions between scenes filmed on different days and in different houses. This required precise matching of shots to ensure the continuity of actions and the seamless flow of the narrative.

Solutions:

  • To overcome these challenges, we developed a detailed shot list that outlined every action and transition. This meticulous planning was crucial to ensure consistency and avoid any discrepancies that could disrupt the flow of the video.

  • We worked closely with the client to align our vision with theirs, making sure every transition and scene change was executed as intended.

Creative Approach

Vision: As the Director of Photography and Co-Director, our creative vision was to capture the excitement and delight of moving into a new home through smooth, visually engaging transitions. We aimed to create a narrative that felt both realistic and aspirational, appealing to young couples looking to buy their first home.

Collaboration: Throughout the project, we maintained close collaboration with Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes. This involved constant communication and feedback loops to ensure that our creative vision aligned perfectly with the client's expectations.
